NASW Assurance Services, Inc. Files its own Legal Action and a Motion to Dismiss Frivolous Legal Action by Preferra Insurance Company Risk Retention Group
Frederick, MD – NASW Assurance Services, Inc. (ASI) and NASW Insurance Company, Inc. (NASWIC) filed a legal action in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on December 17, 2024, outlining the unethical management practices of the former insurance program executive, Anthony Benedetto and his subordinates.
ASI and NASWIC also filed a Motion to Dismiss the numerous false claims filed by Preferra Insurance Company Risk Retention Group (Preferra) on September 20, 2024. “The Court should dismiss the Preferra complaint in its entirety,” says Jeff Borkowski, CPCU, CIC, ARe, Chief Executive Officer of ASI and NASWIC. “Preferra has offered nothing more than weak assertions about alleged wrongdoing by NASW, ASI and NASWIC.”
The ASI and NASWIC actions detail how the Preferra lawsuit is groundless and outlines unscrupulous actions taken by Preferra, Benedetto, and his subordinates. The lawsuit against Preferra claims damages in excess of $20 million dollars.
“All year, Preferra has engaged in an aggressive public relations campaign to malign the professional organization to which most of its policyholders belong,” says ASI President Ebony Speakes Hall, DSW, MSSA, LISW-S. “The purpose of our insurance program is to serve the best interests of NASW members and the social work profession, not insurance executives.”
While ASI and NASWIC continue to protect its investment, we are also developing insurance services and products with additional information forthcoming later in 2025.
NASW Assurance Services (ASI) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NASW and exists to manage social worker insurance programs with our policyholders’ best interests in mind. We work hard to be a socially responsible organization dedicated to improving the lives of social workers.
In all our insurance products, we offer excellent value: the best possible product to meet the specific needs of social workers at the most competitive group rates. ASI understands the abundant rewards of helping others. We also understand the importance of assessing and minimizing risk when working in today’s litigious society.
As social workers become increasingly subject to malpractice lawsuits, defense against such claims, even when they are groundless or fraudulent, can be extremely expensive. Consequently, liability insurance is no longer simply an option; it’s a necessity.
ASI is the insurance arm of the largest organization of professional social workers in the world.
We select a high-quality, affordable program tailored to the broad scope of social work practice. We manage the program to ensure policyholders receive excellent, caring customer service. We provide risk management education and advocate if you’re unfairly denied coverage or renewal.
Unlike many insurance companies, which focus on creating profits for corporate shareholders, our goal is to pay program expenses that invest in initiatives that benefit policyholders and advance the social work profession.
