Frederick, Maryland – September 13, 2018 — Policyholders can rest assured knowing that their current professional liability insurance protection will cover them during their disaster relief efforts, just as it protects them in the state where they currently practice. The Preferra Insurance Company RRG, formerly NASW Risk Retention Group, is pleased to be able to make this unique accommodation for its policyholders who might serve in the affected states and feel secure pursuing those in need for (1) year following a major hurricane. Our hope is that the impending storm will avoid landfall; however, we are poised to support our policyholders if their efforts are needed.

The Preferra Insurance Company RRG, formerly NASW Risk Retention Group, Inc., recognizes that social workers will be among the many professionals crossing state lines to offer help with disaster relief efforts in the wake of the storm. For all RRG professional liability insurance policyholders, there is a policy contract provision requiring social workers to operate within the scope of their state licensure. However, in response to any potential critical need for social workers in affected areas following a hurricane, we have waived this policy contract provision to allow our policyholders to practice in the affected areas through September 1, 2019, when working with authorized volunteer relief organizations or hospitals tasked to provide services that require social work professionals.

Social workers are on the front line when it comes to providing disaster relief and mental health services. As a potentially dangerous Hurricane Florence approaches the eastern seaboard, social workers around the country will respond swiftly to offer professional assistance to those impacted by the storms and flooding. The potential need for social workers in the coming weeks and months following any hurricane is extremely important.

The Preferra Insurance Company RRG, formerly NASW Risk Retention Group, Inc., is overseen by social workers and insurance professionals and is rated ‘Excellent’ by A.M. Best Company and works to design high quality, comprehensive liability insurance products designed specifically for social workers.
